Event Description

This talk will provide greater detail about mining practices that cause sulfide based pollution, examples of how and where this has happened in the area, and discuss how these toxic scenarios can be avoided. Presented by Tom Anderson, a member of Tamarack Water Alliance, a grassroots organization that is looking to protect local water systems.

The Dangers of Sulfide Mining:
Nickel, copper, and cobalt minerals in Minnesota are bonded to sulfur and mined as high sulfide ores. When these high sulfide ores are exposed to air and moisture, a chemical reaction occurs that generates sulfuric acid that migrates into the surrounding environment. The sulfuric acid along with dissolved heavy metals released onto the land will seep into the rich aquifers below and then into streams and lakes at levels that are toxic to fish and other aquatic life. In addition, sulfates interact with sulfate-reducing bacteria to produce the more bio-toxic form of mercury, methylmercury, a known neuro-developmental toxin. This toxic form of mercury can accumulate in fish resulting in warnings to "not eat the fish" in impaired waters.
